Education for health care providers

This section of LavenderHealth provides information you can use in any education program, at any level, to introduce basic LGBTQ care concepts to students and practitioners.

Our “Education” sections take you to material you can use to design a presentation or program that is right for you.  Plan at least a 90 minute time frame but we recommend at least 3 hours.

Start by becoming familiar with the material we have provided.  Read the text LGBTQ Cultures:  What Health Care Professionals Need to Know About Sexual and Gender Diversity, 2nd Edition. The text includes a bank of questions for discussion or evaluation.

We believe that all health care providers need to know about the particular needs of LGBTQ people in order to overcome the health disparities in this community. Here are two videos that addresss general issues related to LGBTQ content in healthcare education:

The first is a 34 minute panel discussion about the “hidden curriculum.”

Here is a 4 minute video in which Peggy shares more about the need for LGBTQ education

The LGBTQ Cultures: What Health Care Professionals Need to Know About Sexual & Gender Diversity looks like an excellent resource. Unfortunately, as a Graduate Faculty wanting to use this as a textbook for my NP Students, the availability only on Kindle is a barrier. I cannot require students to purchase a kindle for this one textbook. Please consider making this valuable resource available in other e-book forms or in print.

Thank you for this feedback! Actually the book is available on all the eBook platforms, not just Kindle. And, there is a Kindle app for any device – computers, laptops, smart phones and tablets. So if someone has a computer or some other electronic device, they can download the Kindle app and access any Kindle book; the same is true for Nook as well. I hope this helps! Peggy
